Doris May Lanning, 89, passed away Friday, March 28 from health complications at Cox Medical Centers with her four children and family surrounding her.

She was the daughter of Walter and Ethel McDaniel who preceded her in death. She was born October 18, 1924 in Paola, Kansas and grew up on a farm southwest of town. After high school, she moved to Kansas City to work as one of America’s iconic “Rosie the Riveter” building B29 bombers during WWII. It was in KC she met Army Private James “Jimmy” Lanning. They fell in love and were married on January 22, 1944. They celebrated their 50th anniversary shortly before Jimmy’s death in 1994.

Doris was also preceded by an infant daughter, Debra, a sister, Ruth Wade and an infant brother.

Doris was loved by all who knew her. She loved being a member of East Sunshine Church of Christ, her Wednesday luncheon group, and Friday Rook parties. She loved to cook, sew and work Sudoku and Jumble puzzles. She joyfully read her Bible taking every word to heart and applying it to her life.

She is survived by her children, Gary and Judy Lanning, Surprise, Az., Sharon Kahmann, Ozark, Mo, Linda and Jim Grigsby, Marshfield, Mo and Steve and Marti Lanning, Santee, Ca.

She was the proud Grandma of Army LTC Andy Kahmann, Eva Taylor, Scott Lanning, Julie Grigsby, Dana Lee, Tiffany Windham and Steven Lanning. She was truly loved by her great-grandchildren Jessica, Greyson, Trey, Cori, Abby, Andrew, Riley, Alyssa, Carson, Eli and Audrey. They will miss their Grandma “DD.”
